Can You Get Braces or Invisalign With Crowns, Implants, or Missing Teeth?

Yes, you can usually get braces or clear aligners with crowns, bridges, implants, or missing teeth — but the plan changes. Crowns can be bonded to or moved with aligners, natural teeth move normally, and implants do not move at all because they are fused to bone. Your orthodontist plans around those fixed points.

This is one of the most common reasons adults assume they are not candidates for orthodontic treatment. In most cases they are. What they actually need is a provider who plans the case with a restorative dentist rather than around them.

How Existing Dental Work Affects Tooth Movement

What you have Can it move? What it means for your plan
Crown on a natural tooth Yes The root moves normally; bonding to porcelain needs a different technique
Bridge (multiple teeth joined) No, as a unit Often must be sectioned or replaced after treatment
Dental implant No Becomes a fixed anchor; other teeth are moved relative to it
Veneers Yes, the tooth moves Bonding and finishing require care to avoid chipping
Missing tooth, space left open N/A Space can be closed, or held open for a future implant
Root canal treated tooth Yes Moves normally in most cases; monitored more closely

Crowns and Veneers: Bonding Is the Real Issue

Braces brackets and aligner attachments are designed to bond to enamel. Porcelain is not enamel. To attach reliably to a crown or veneer, your orthodontist uses surface preparation and primers made for ceramic, and even then those bonds fail more often than bonds to natural teeth.

That is a manageable inconvenience, not a disqualification. It does mean you should expect an occasional re-bond appointment and should mention every crown and veneer at your consultation, including ones you think are invisible.

Implants: The Anchor You Cannot Move

An implant is fused directly to bone, with no periodontal ligament, which is the tissue that makes orthodontic movement possible. It will not budge no matter what force is applied.

Two practical consequences:

  • Sequence matters enormously. If you are missing a tooth and considering an implant, the ideal order is almost always orthodontics first, implant second. Placing the implant first locks in a position that may not match your final bite.
  • An existing implant can be an advantage. Because it does not move, it can serve as a stable anchor to move other teeth against.

If you already have an implant, treatment is still very possible. The plan simply works around that fixed point.

Missing Teeth: Close the Space or Save It?

When a tooth is gone, your orthodontist has two strategic options, and the right one depends on your bite, the size of the gap, and your long-term restorative plan:

  1. Close the space. Move neighboring teeth together so no restoration is needed at all. Often ideal when the gap is small or in the back.
  2. Idealize the space. Position the neighboring teeth so the gap is exactly the right width for a future implant or bridge, then hold it with a retainer until the restoration is placed.

Long-standing gaps have a complication worth knowing about: teeth adjacent to a missing tooth tend to tip into the space, and the opposing tooth can drift down or up. Orthodontics is frequently used specifically to upright those teeth so a restoration can be done properly.

Braces or Aligners for These Cases?

Both work. Clear aligners avoid bonding brackets to porcelain, which some patients with extensive crown work prefer, and trays can be trimmed around a bridge. Metal braces offer more direct control when teeth need significant uprighting or root movement. The decision comes out of your records, not a preference stated in advance.

The Right Order of Operations

Sequencing is where these cases succeed or fail. The general rule: move teeth first, then restore.

Your situation Recommended sequence Why
Missing tooth, no implant yet Orthodontics → implant → crown Space is positioned ideally before a fixed anchor is placed
Implant already placed Orthodontics planned around the implant The implant cannot move; other teeth are moved relative to it
Old bridge spanning the gap Section or replace the bridge → orthodontics → new restoration A bridge joins teeth and blocks individual movement
Front teeth need veneers or crowns Orthodontics → restorative Straight teeth need less aggressive restoration, preserving enamel
Tooth tipped into an old extraction space Orthodontics to upright → implant or crown An upright tooth and a proper space are prerequisites for a good restoration

Getting this backwards is expensive. A crown or implant placed to fit a crooked bite often has to be redone once the teeth are straight.

Why Orthodontics Improves Restorative Outcomes

Straightening teeth before restorative work is not cosmetic sequencing, it is conservative dentistry. Three concrete benefits:

  • Less enamel removed. A well-aligned tooth needs a thinner veneer or a more conservative crown preparation than a rotated one.
  • Better implant position. Implants need adequate space and bone in three dimensions. Orthodontics can create both.
  • Forces distributed properly. A restoration in a corrected bite takes even load. In a bad bite it absorbs uneven force, which is how crowns fracture and implants fail.

Special Considerations for Adults With Extensive Dental History

Bone Levels

Long-standing gum disease reduces the bone supporting each tooth. Movement is still possible when the disease is controlled, but forces must be lighter and progress slower. Your orthodontist and, when needed, a periodontist should evaluate this before treatment.

Ankylosed Teeth

Occasionally a tooth fuses to bone after trauma, behaving like an implant. It will not move. This is identified during records review, and the plan accounts for it.

Root-Canal-Treated Teeth

These move normally in most cases. They are monitored more closely because a previously traumatized tooth has a slightly higher chance of root resorption.

Worn or Chipped Front Teeth

Decades of a misaligned bite leave uneven wear. Orthodontics can reposition teeth so that bonding or veneers restore normal proportions afterward rather than compensating for tilt.

Existing Bonded Retainers

If you have a wire bonded behind your lower front teeth from previous treatment, it will typically be removed at the start of a new case and replaced at the end.

What Records You Will Need

Bring or arrange to have sent:

  • Recent X-rays, including any taken before implant placement
  • Dates and locations of crowns, bridges, implants, and veneers
  • Any periodontal charting or gum-treatment history
  • The name of the dentist who did the restorative work, so plans can be coordinated

The more complete this history is at the first visit, the more accurate your timeline and quote will be. Cases with significant restorative history are exactly the cases where a vague plan causes problems later.

What Treatment Typically Costs in These Cases

Orthodontic fees for adults in the Corona and Riverside area generally fall in the same $3,000 to $8,000 range as other comprehensive cases; complexity, not the presence of dental work, drives the number. What does change is the total project cost, because restorations that follow are billed by your restorative dentist. Ask both offices for a combined sequence and estimate before you start, so there are no surprises at the handoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my dentist involved?

Yes. Cases with crowns, bridges, implants, or planned restorations should be coordinated between your orthodontist and your restorative dentist so the final bite and the final restorations match.

Will braces damage my crowns?

Damage is uncommon. Chipping is the main risk during bracket removal, which is why your orthodontist uses different removal techniques on ceramic surfaces.

Can I straighten my teeth if I have gum disease?

Active periodontal disease must be treated and stabilized first. Moving teeth through inflamed, weakened bone can worsen bone loss. Once controlled, orthodontic treatment is often part of the long-term solution.

Is there an age limit for adult orthodontics?

No. Healthy bone and gums matter far more than age. Learn more about orthodontic care for adults in Riverside, CA.

I was told years ago I was not a candidate. Has that changed?

Possibly. Digital planning, temporary anchorage devices, and improved aligner mechanics have expanded what is treatable. A current set of records is the only way to know.

The friendliest medical staff i have encountered. Everyone is ready to help from the reception desk to the management to the medical staff they are all amazing! I have specifically dealt with Djournee and Stephanie and they are both the best! So helpful and accommodating, making sure my son’s comfort comes first. The doctors are really professional and very knowledgeable, my son’s case was rather sensitive and required coordination with an outsourced oral surgeon and they did perfectly.

We had a wonderful experience with Dejane today at Larson Orthodontics. She tended to my 19-year old son, who recently had jaw surgery and is now under the care of Dr. Larson to complete his orthodontic treatment. Dejane was professional, friendly and completed the necessary tasks in a timely manner. She was great! All of my three children, as well as myself, have been patients of Dr. Larson’s for many years. I can’t say enough in praise of Dr. Larson (a genius at his craft) and his staff.
