Can You Play Sports With Braces?

Yes, you can play sports with braces. You need an orthodontic mouthguard — a larger, more flexible guard designed to fit over brackets. Standard boil-and-bite guards do not work well over braces, and playing contact sports without protection risks broken brackets, cut lips, and damaged teeth.

Braces have never stopped anyone from playing. What ends seasons early is an avoidable mouth injury, and the fix costs less than a single replacement bracket appointment.

Why Braces Change Your Mouthguard Needs

A regular mouthguard is molded tightly to your teeth. Braces change the shape of those teeth every few weeks, and brackets create hard edges facing the inside of your lips. Two consequences:

  • A tight-fitting conventional guard will not seat over brackets, and forcing it can pop brackets off
  • Without a cushion, an impact drives your lips into the brackets, which is how most braces-related lacerations happen

Orthodontic mouthguards are made of a softer, higher-volume material with extra channel depth to accommodate brackets and to keep fitting as teeth move.

Types of Mouthguards for Braces

Type Fit Notes
Orthodontic stock guard Generic, one size Inexpensive, widely available, bulkiest option
Orthodontic boil-and-bite Semi-custom, remoldable Look for versions labeled for braces; can be re-formed as teeth move
Custom guard from your orthodontist Made from a scan of your mouth Best fit, comfort, and speech; may need remaking mid-treatment
Upper and lower guards Both arches protected Recommended when you have braces on both arches, especially in high-contact sports

Ask your orthodontist which option fits your sport and your stage of treatment. A player two months from debond needs a different answer than one just starting.

Which Sports Require a Mouthguard?

Always

Football, hockey, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, wrestling, boxing and martial arts, water polo, and skateboarding or BMX. Basketball and soccer generate more dental injuries than people expect, because elbows and heads are at mouth height.

Strongly Recommended

Baseball and softball, volleyball, gymnastics, cheerleading, mountain biking, and any activity with a real fall risk.

Generally Not Needed

Swimming, track, tennis, golf, and cross country — unless you have significant overjet, in which case protruding front teeth carry more risk in almost any activity.

Playing Sports With Clear Aligners

Aligners are a different situation. The trays themselves are not protective equipment. For contact sports:

  • Remove the aligners and wear a proper mouthguard for the game or practice
  • Store trays in their case, never in a pocket or a bag loose
  • Reinsert immediately afterward and account for the lost hours in your daily wear time
  • For non-contact training, trays can usually stay in

Athletes with heavy practice schedules should raise this at their consultation, because it materially affects daily wear time. See Invisalign for kids in Riverside, CA.

What to Do If You Get Hit

  1. Check the teeth first. A loose, displaced, or knocked-out tooth is a same-day dental emergency, not an orthodontic one.
  2. Then check the appliance. Loose brackets, bent wires, or a wire out of a bracket all need attention.
  3. Cover sharp edges with orthodontic wax until you can be seen.
  4. Rinse with salt water for cut lips or cheeks.
  5. Call your orthodontist the same day if anything is broken. See emergency orthodontic care in Riverside, CA.
  6. Do not wait for your next scheduled visit. A broken bracket means that tooth has stopped moving.

Practical Habits for Athletes in Braces

  • Keep the mouthguard in your bag, not at home — the one you forget does not protect anything
  • Rinse it after every use and let it air dry; store it in a vented case
  • Replace it when it tears, thins, or stops seating, which for growing athletes may be a couple of times per season
  • Bring it to adjustment appointments so fit can be checked as teeth move
  • Skip sports drinks during braces treatment where you can; the sugar sits around brackets and causes permanent white marks
  • Carry wax and a small brush in your kit for tournaments and travel

What a Mouthguard Costs vs. What an Injury Costs

Item Typical cost
Orthodontic stock or boil-and-bite guard About $10 to $40
Custom guard from your orthodontist Often $100 to $300
Repairing broken brackets and a bent wire Repair fees plus lost treatment time
Treating a fractured front tooth Frequently $1,000+ per tooth, and it recurs over a lifetime
Replacing a knocked-out tooth with an implant Commonly $3,000 to $6,000

General market ranges, not a quote — but the ratio is the point. A guard is the cheapest insurance in youth sports.

Coaches, Parents, and the Season Plan

  • Tell the coach and athletic trainer that your athlete is in braces, so a mouth injury is handled correctly rather than shrugged off.
  • Schedule adjustments away from game days where possible; teeth are sore for a day or two afterward.
  • Keep a travel kit with wax, a spare guard, a toothbrush, and your orthodontist’s number.
  • Plan debond timing around the season if it matters for team photos or championships — ask early, since the answer depends on your treatment progress, not the calendar.
  • For aligner athletes, log the hours lost to practices and games so wear time stays honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a regular boil-and-bite mouthguard over braces?

Only if it is specifically labeled for orthodontics. A standard guard molded tightly to brackets can pull them off when removed.

Do I need a mouthguard on both top and bottom?

If you have braces on both arches and play a contact sport, protecting both is the safer choice. Your orthodontist can advise based on your sport.

Will a mouthguard affect my breathing or talking?

Bulkier stock guards can. Custom and quality orthodontic guards are noticeably better for speech and airflow, which matters for athletes who need to call plays.

Can braces get damaged even with a mouthguard?

A hard enough impact can still loosen a bracket, but a guard dramatically reduces the risk and prevents most soft-tissue injuries.

Should I delay braces until the season ends?

Usually no. With proper protection, athletes complete treatment during their seasons routinely. Delaying treatment has its own costs, especially for growing patients where timing matters.

Reviewer praising Larson Orthodontics for quick, friendly care

We had a wonderful experience with Dejane today at Larson Orthodontics. She tended to my 19-year old son, who recently had jaw surgery and is now under the care of Dr. Larson to complete his orthodontic treatment. Dejane was professional, friendly and completed the necessary tasks in a timely manner. She was great! All of my three children, as well as myself, have been patients of Dr. Larson’s for many years. I can’t say enough in praise of Dr. Larson (a genius at his craft) and his staff.
